Big Blind Poker Hands

Today you’ll be playing in a multi-table tournament where you must defend your big blind with less than 20BBs in the effective stack. In many tournaments, especially in the mid to late stages, this spot will be one of the most commonly played in all of poker.

Your range to defend the big blind against a min-raise will be quite wide at this stack depth. However, certain hands like most pocket pairs and a variety of hands containing an Ace will not be in your range, since you would reshove with those hands preflop.

The blinds are forced bets posted by players to the left of the dealer button in flop-style poker games. The number of blinds is usually two, but it can range from none to three. The small blind is placed by the player to the left of the dealer button and the big blind is then posted by the next player to the left. For example, if the big blind in a live table game is $3, then the small blind will usually be $1 or $2 since most casinos do not distribute large quantities of $0.50 poker chips. The blinds exist because Omaha and Texas hold 'em are frequently played without antes, allowing a player to fold his hand without placing a bet. Playing the Blinds in Hold'em Hand Selection from the Small Blind. You can play some additional hands from the small blind if the pot was not raised and the conditions are right. You are getting a discount to call, and you have all the information about how the pot has developed unless the big blind happens to raise. So a $2/$4 Limit Hold’em game has a small blind of $1 and a big blind of $2. Blinds are forced bets. The players in these positions must make these bets or they aren’t dealt cards in the hand. These blinds, in turn, force betting action on the table after everyone has been dealt their hole cards. Indeed, if you’re in the big blind facing a minraise, it can often be a much lower-variance play to simply take a flop getting 3.5-1 or better with some hands that flop well. Anything from a hand like K6s to J8s to QTo can be a good candidate to take a flop and try to flop a strong pair or draw.

Postflop, you’ll want to keep in mind that due to the shallow stacks you can simply check-call with many of your strong hands, since standard betting on all streets will allow you to be all-in by the river.

Since ranges are very wide, you’ll generally be able to continue profitably against small c-bets with hands as weak as undercards to the board with gutshot straight draws. Facing larger c-bets, you should be prepared to fold hands as strong as bottom pair no draw when the flop structure is somewhat coordinated. You may not be able to get to showdown profitably with those weak pairs on very poor board structures.

When your opponent checks back on the flop, you should generally size up your turn lead bets. Draws as weak as gutshots are valuable to round out a turn betting range in these spots.

Finally, in passively played pots checked down to the river, don’t be afraid to value bet hands such as 2nd pair. You can often get value from bottom pair type hands or even Ace high.
